1994 Luther College graduate Karla (Sylling) Bloem, the founder and executive director of the International Owl Center in Houston, Minnesota, has used an auction of Ukrainian art to raise over $222,000 for that country.

Bloem, along with volunteers and staff, pulled more than 300 pieces of Ukrainian art from the Owl Center’s archives, then sold them at three auctions. One piece of artwork, “The Snowy Owl” by 14-year-old Sofia Burevich, went for over $8,000.

Proceeds from the three auctions–more than $222,000—will be going to UNICEF to help the children of Ukraine. “I am touched by how much people care and how generous and supportive they are,” said Bloem.

There are still two online auctions to go. They are planned for June 22nd through June 26th, and August 10th through August 14th. To be notified of the auctions, people can sign up for the International Owl Center’s e-newsletter on their website,
